This Week’s Buzz Around Town from Fort Pitt Web Shop
In case you missed it, here’s a roundup of news from area nonprofits:
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
Primanti’s brought back their popular “When Pigs Fly” sandwich for a limited time until August 31, and when you order one you’ll not only be feeding yourself, but helping the Pittsburgh Community Food Bank feed others.
Heinz History Center
Heinz History Center will celebrate the best of local food on Saturday, June 27 with Hometown-Homegrown, it’s 4th annual food expo. In addition to free samples from forty local vendors, there’ll be cooking demos from Chris Fennimore, Sonja Finn from Dinette and Trivet Hooper from Legume. Bring along used cookbooks to exchange.
Allegheny County Parks/Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
Enjoy the world renown Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a free concert in lovely Hartwood Acres on Sunday, July 5.
Pittsburghers get to enjoy two Independence Day celebrations when Lawrenceville United goes all out for a day long party in Arsenal Park with bands, food, lots of kids’ activities like pony rides, a petting zoo and more on Saturday, June 27. At dark, like any good ‘Burgh event, it’s all capped off with Zambelli fireworks.
Animal Rescue League
The Galleria Mall in Mt. Lebanon will host the Galleria Uncorked Wine and Spirits Festival on July 18 with vendors offering tastings and sale. Tickets are $20 and benefit the Animal Rescue League. Over 21, of course.
Allegheny County Parks
Kids 9 to 18 can attend free basketball mini-camps sponsored by Allegheny County Parks this summer. There are 30 camps scheduled and they’re held in ten different communities.
When school’s out, access to school lunches stops and that means the end of proper nutrition for thousands of local kids. Now the GrubUp food truck will bring healthy food to kids up to age 18 at dozens of locations. GrubUp is a new program administered by Citiparks in cooperation with Just Harvest, Healty 412 and the Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
The newly planted trees in Troy Hill provided by Tree Vitalize are ready for mulch, so join the Tree Pittsburgh party on Tues., June 30, 6-8 PM. They’ll provide all the tools and instructions.
Holy Family Institute
In 2014 Holy Family Institute helped 27,000 families and children overcome problems. Support their work at the Drive for HFI Golf Classic on July 27 at Montour Country Club
Sometimes great failure precedes great success. #FailureLab brings together storytellers recounting their journey, punctuates the event with thoughtful performances and allows the audience to reflect and comment.
