About the Pittsburgh Triathlon
The 18th Annual Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race will take place August 7-9, 2015. Athletes will travel the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and Three Rivers Water Trail. The Pittsburgh Triathlon is hosted by Friends of the Riverfront and is the organization’s largest fundraiser.
Each year, almost 2,000 athletes from Pittsburgh and across the nation compete in the event. This year, the Pittsburgh Triathlon has been selling out so quickly that it was expanded into a three-day event with up to 1,000 athletes participating each day.
The Expo will start the weekend off on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and will continue Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon and Sunday from 6 a.m. until noon. The Sprint Triathlon and Adventure Race will take place on Saturday, beginning at 6:45 a.m. and 7:15 a.m., respectively. Closing out the event on Sunday will be the International Distance Triathlon, which will begin at 6:45 a.m.
The Pittsburgh Triathlon has been awarded a Green Certification by Athletes For a Fit Planet each year since 2010. Friends of the Riverfront takes a Pledge of Sustainability to merit the certification and show that they are dedicated to keeping the environment healthy.
About Friends of the Riverfront
Friends of the Riverfront increases awareness and engagement with rivers and riverfronts in the Pittsburgh region through activities, stewardship and expansion of land and water trails.
Friends of the Riverfront has been working to restore Pittsburgh area riverfronts for public use since 1991. Their efforts have changed the rivers and riverfronts that were once full of industrial waste into areas that are safe and capable of sustaining fun-filled activities.
A main initiative of Friends of the Riverfront is to maintain the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and the Three Rivers Water Trail by working with community partners, government officials, and a dedicated number of volunteers.
