Memorial Day Celebration
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum is holding its annual Memorial Day Celebration on Monday, May 25, from 11 am to 4 pm. The event is free and open to the public, encouraging people of all ages to come out and celebrate the men and women who have served our country.
This “Old Fashioned American Celebration” will kick off with a special ceremony in the Auditorium to honor nearly 300 fallen Pennsylvania service members from the War on Terror.
“Each year Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum observes Memorial Day with both reverence and purpose. We invite the community to join us as we maintain the tradition to reflect and remind us of the true meaning of Memorial Day–to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country,” said President & CEO John F. McCabe.
The whole family can enjoy Memorial Day at the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum. Enjoy a performance by the 6th Regiment Civil War USCT Drum Corps and engage in various activities throughout the day. Don’t worry about heading home for lunch–food and drinks will be available for purchase, and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs to picnic on the front lawn.
A photo booth will be available to document your experience at the Memorial Day Celebration. Bring the kids out for a fun house, face painting, a balloon artist and to see costumed characters. Stick around for assorted contests and participate in the raffle and auction. Be sure to take a tour of the museum while you’re there!
Several community organizations like the Department of Veterans Affairs, Steel City Vets, the Pittsburgh Fisher House, and more will be represented at the event. Stop by the Operation Troop Appreciation table to write letters to troops or donate supplies for care packages. Not sure what to donate? No worries! A list of items frequently requested by deployed troops can be found here!
A free patriotic concert by The Brass Roots will conclude the Memorial Day Celebration.
About Soldiers & Sailors
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust honors the men and women of Pennsylvania who served the United States Military throughout history.
The organization was originally constructed by the Grand Army of the Republic in the 1980s to recognize the sacrifice, valor, and patriotism of Allegheny County veterans of the Civil War. Today, Soldiers & Sailors is the only military memorial in the nation that is dedicated to honoring veterans of all branches of service and in all capacities.
Soldiers & Sailors promotes the understanding and appreciation of the duties of service men and women by creating a greater public awareness of the importance and holdings of the memorial.
